How to Make Cold Brew Coffee

Nothing says summer like a refreshing cup of cold brew to start the day☀️

Now, cold brew isn’t just a fancy term for iced coffee. Iced coffee is made with hot water and poured over ice whereas cold brew is made with room temperature, filtered water that is left to seep for 12-18 hours. The result is a stronger but smoother taste without the bitterness of iced coffee.

It’s super simple and easy to make at home and will save you $$$ as cold brew from a coffee shop is usually pretty expensive.

Once you’ve made your cold brew, dilute it with water or your choice of milk and serve over coffee ice cubes to prevent it from getting watery.

I’ve used Alpro Coconut drink for a refreshing, “I’m waking up on a beach” vibe.

Ingredients/ Equipment

  • 90g coarsely ground coffee

  • 800ml filtered, room temperature water

  • A French press, jar or bottle

  • Paper coffee filter or cheesecloth

  • Fine mesh sieve

Method:

  1. Place the ground coffee into an 8-cup French Press, jar or bottle and pour in the water.

  2. Stir gently and cover with a lid or plate. If using a French Press, put the lid back on but don’t press it.

  3. Leave it to steep for 12-18 hours (longer for stronger coffee) but no longer than 24 hours as this will make it super bitter.

  4. When ready remove the lid or if using a French Press, push the plunger down. Place a coffee filter or cheesecloth over a fine-mesh sieve, then place this over a large container.

  5. Pour the coffee through the filter/ cheesecloth to remove any large grounds of coffee or sediment and create a smooth brew. If you don’t have a French Press you might need to do this process more than once.

  6. To serve, dilute your cold brew with a 1:1 ratio of your choice of milk or water eg half a glass of cold brew with half a glass of milk/water. Use more water/milk if you don’t want it too strong.

  7. Store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
